Before the wedding the Dowry (ጧሎሽ) is given as agreed. On the wedding day the groom and three or four “bestmen” (ሚዜ) go to the wife’s house. At the house the wife’s family and friends ceremonially block the entrance to the house. The associates must sing strongly and force their way into the house. The first bestman holds perfume and sprays everywhere inside the house. Customarily, marriage proceedings often begin with the man proposing to the woman. Jewish Cookery from Boston to Baghdad

What is Jewish food? In North America, we think of gefillte fish, bagels & lox, & chopped liver. These foods are the legacy of Eastern European Jews who immigrated to this continent in the 19th century. However, Sephardic & Oriental Jews define Jewish food in terms of couscous, borekas & chiles rellenos. This book offers us a guided tour through the cuisines & customs of such diverse Jewish communities as the Beta Israel of Ethiopia, the Bene Yisrael of India, & the Jews of K aifeng-fu in China. Filled with fascinating vignettes & mouth-watering recipes, the book includes a glossary & an introduction to Jewish communities & food customs.

Rings in a Tree

Rings in a Tree

A Jewish family splintered across time and generations to remote corners of the world, from the Polish village of Sharabka, to Cape Town, Johannesburg, and the United States, is the subject of this debut novel. With themes of loyalty, memory, and a Jewish nostalgia for a “lost home,” this tenderly told story unravels with humor and sadness the lives and journeys of a family with individuals that seek to branch out and continue to feed on the nourishment of family roots. Withstanding a series of separations and chance reunions, this weathered but strong family creates a tree marked with the growth rings of time patterns of love and joy and fear and fragility that keep families together.
